Authorities recover body of missing Ely snowmobiler
Associated Press

St. Louis County authorities said the sheriff's volunteer rescue squad found the body of Robert Engebretson, 66, of Ely, late Wednesday in Burntside Lake northwest of Ely.

Engebretson and a companion were riding snowmobiles in a bay Wednesday when Engebretson's snowmobile broke through the ice and sank in 27 feet of water.

The rescue squad located Engebretson's body with the help of a remote-operated vehicle. He body was later recovered.

Fishaholik, my two sons and I fished for Lakers here late last winter. The locals told us the lake is knowen for dangerous ice conditions anytime during the winter.

WTH were these guys thinking going out there this early in the season?

Right before Christmas too...tough time for the families

They will be in our prayers

Stay off the ice untill it's safe!!

This was a post from a snowmobiler from Ely who talked with someone from the fire Dept

"well, it was official. There were two guys one in his late 40s, and the 54 year old man. They told there buddy, who is on the fire dept. that they had to go fix something on the lake, maybe at someones cabin or something, and the fire dept guy said, OK ill be waiting for the call when you guys don't make it. And the younger guy somehow made it off the lake.

---------------------------------

You can warn people and tell them what they are doing is stupid but ultimately it's their decision, sad but others have to live with that decision for the rest of their lives
