Great video Tim. I just may have to look into an electric fillet knife.

I switched to an electric knife about 7-8 years ago and haven't looked back.  :happy1:

Definitely saves time!

If you would of told me a few years ago that you used an electric knife to fillets your fish I would of looked at you funny.......

I think I started 2 years ago after watching a few of the local guides come in and use these electric knives. They would come off the lake with piles of fish and slice through them in no time and what seemed like no effort. It truly is easier and smoother I think. The video does not do it justice. I think we picked that knife up for about $15.00, next time you have a few fish give it a whirl! I remember sometimes half way through filleting a batch of fish I would have to resharpen my knife..not anymore ;)

Nice job Tim. I was just thinking what to take out of the freezer for dinner tonight and you've decided for me. I went to Supreme Lobster to purchase some smoked Cajun salmon for Christmas. While I was there I looked at the price of walleye fillets and they were $13.25 per lb.

Wahoo, You may need an armed guard to hall those puppies home in the future.
Nice job on the video bro.

What brand/model of electric knife would you recommend? Could you use one on sunfish?

I use a Rapala, it comes with 2 blades, very nice knife and package.

That electric knife takes the ribs out real nice.  Thats one of my trouble spots.

Looks like it also helps stop that sawing and slipping and sliding that seems to happen after walleye #1 is done and theres a little slime on the board.

Thanks for taking the time to tape it and post it.

After watching Tim's video filleting walleyes It reminded me to go and take some of those Basswood walleyes out of the freezer. Well, Guess what we had for dinner tonight ?  Walleye, home steak fries, coleslaw, and a cold one.  :toast:

Another tip for you all, when filleting a Walleye, start out exactly like the video above, instead of using a knife to cut the ribcage out, take your fingers and grab onto the first bone in line, twist it around once or twice and slowly pull the entire section of bones out like butter. You have to twist the first one or else they break off.

Thats cause i just made it up....  :rotflmao:

Actually I have always used either your method or filleting them around the bones. But, about 2 years ago, I was watching tv and a chef was doing a demo on filleting Walleye, he taught this new method, so i tried it and it worked better than expected.

here's another tip for yah.  Don't cut the filet all the way off the fish.  When cutting back to the tail stop with about a 1/2" to a 1/4" of the filet still attached.  Then you can flip the fillet over and not have to struggle with holding it in place to take the skin off like in the video.

I've tried that way and just do not prefer it. I guess I just grew up doing it one way and that is easiest for me to do. I tried two years ago and screwed it up :bonk: But I see a lot of people doing that!

How does the electric knife work for smaller fish, like panfish? Do you lose "feel" of the knife or can you still feel the spine and everything? Looks slick fo bigger fish, for sure!

Size does not matter!
 :rotflmao:

I clean all of my fish with an electric knife, actually I clean more panfish than anything else and it works great.

I just about guarantee you will butcher the first 2-3 fish until you realize to let the knife do all the work, you'll be fine. All you do is guide the knife, it does the work for you. Going from a regular fillet knife to an electric is more in your head than anything else, you just have to be open to the change. Smaller sunnies and Crappies are not a problem.
