Saturday 6/21 Report
 
Today I was fortunate enough to fish with the Benkeser family for the first time ever. They had their own boat at the hotel, but wanted to pick up some pointers before venturing out on their own for the rest of the week.


Well, right off the bat my trolling motor didn't work at all so this was not a good start  (Thanks Minnkota!). The winds were relatively light, so we worked a slow drift pattern catching plenty of practice fish (rockies). After everyone caught enough practice fish they became more comfortable with the equipment and technique. 


Now it was time to graduate to some Bass fishing and the level of enthusiasm and intensity grew rapidly when contact was made with the first smallmouth after a short move. Then the rains came early along with gloomy sky's out of the West and it didn't look good at all. We scrambled for the rain gear and were ready for an all day rain. After about 30 minutes blue sky's appeared out of the west and it cleared up nicely.


Spirits lifted quickly and the two ladies in the boat were ready for some serious fish and got their wish. First we did some shallow drifts and started to catch largemouths working the shorelines in 7 to 14 ft. I dropped out deeper and we kept hitting large schools of big gills in 18 to 30 ft. If we wanted to we could have sat on those big gills all day. But It was time to seek out those post spawn smallies. Sarah, the daughter of Don and Chris was really enjoying the competition with her dad and they kept trash talkin each other all day. When I pulled the anchor up from one spot there was a smooth stone stuck to the anchor. So I gave it to Sara and promised it was a lucky stone and she needed to keep it near her at all times.


This was just what she needed since she began to smoke everyone in the boat when it came to the smallies. Sarah's best smallie was 20.5 inches with her dad trying to keep pace, but he got left in the dust. Before we knew it the clock said it was time to call it a day. I really enjoyed spending the day with the Benkeser's and look forward to fishing with them in the future.


**Modesty is the only sure bait when you are fishing for praise.
