Went out on Burntside from the Van Vac landing and drilled a bunch of holes out to sixty-plus feet of water. We found the bay had eight inches of good solid ice with three to four inches of soft white frozen slush on top of it. I felt safe moving about on foot, but I would not say that it's ready for vehicle traffic just yet. Sleds are OK, but even four wheelers will have some trouble. There are a few slushy spots, but for the most part these areas are firming up nicely. There's anywhere from six to ten inches of snow on top, but it seems that most of the snow has been blown off.
I caution everyone to wait a while for more ice to build before taking a vehicle out there. Keep in mind that thre are going to be areas of only four inches of ice or so, so BE VERY CAUTIOUS before venturing out further that within a half mile of the landing. Drill holes as you go just to be on the safe side. Thre's not a fish in the world worth dying for.
