Okay, this may sound silly, but I really want to know the answer so I am going to ask it anyway.

The other day, I was looking for sheds in the woods by our house, and I sat and watched two deer for a while, I had my camera with so I even taped this happening.  The funny thing was they knew I was there, but didn't seem to mind as I sat very still.  Anyway, one deer kept trying to "get on" the other one, he (or she), lol, did this three different times.  Now I know they are not in rut right now, but do they do it just for fun or what?  Seriously, I have no idea, or do you think they were just playing around.  It sure looked like he was trying to do it.  Anyone have any idea?

Since white-tailed deer are seasonal breeders like some species of livestock (most breeds of sheep for example) am wondering if they don't share some of the same characteristics? For instance, if a ewe will stand still, the ram may give it a try. If she won't, he may chase awhile but usually loses interest and goes back to eating and sleeping like most guys. In the fall, due to shortening photperiod and temperature, ewes begin to cycle about every 14 - 16 days. Rams can smell the estrus pheromones in the air, get very agitated and their scent glands make them really reek. When we manipulate the ewes to come into heat out of season in May or August (can be done hormonally or through a "darking" process), the rams will still breed them even though it really isn't their usual time. The percentage conception is not as high, but they are still capable of getting the job done. While there hasn't been nearly as much research done on deer, someone must have played around with this somewhere along the line. That and there are likely differences in the genome of the deer population out here where some individuals breed later, earlier, etc. All the fawns are not born at exactly the same time are they? And speaking of studies, there were some done on sheep that determined that about 6% of the ram population was, um, homosexual. Ah, the things one doesn't read over morning coffee... :coffee:

I've seen young deer do it before and asked about it and looked it up and what I've read and heard is that young deer will do it because their hormones are going crazy (like deer puberty) and yeah it's kinda like practicing. I've seen young puppies do it too.
They also said that when older bucks do it they are just proving his status in the pecking order and just keeping the younger bucks in check.........so I guess it's like a federal prison in the woods :rotflmao:
Let the small bucks walk. Don't assume the neighbors will shoot them if you don't. If you shoot him what chance does that buck have to grow......ZERO!

I have heard it said, that when any doe comes in, she will stand.
if she does not get bred, she will come in again in 28 days...I may be off on the day count, and this will repeat itself until she does get bred.

As a deer researcher - I can tell you that most likley - Big E was right.

Yearling bucks will begin this in the fall.

But, it could be a non-antlered buck with a doe still in estrus.

Do't be afraid to e-mail me direct at TRMichels@yahoo.com, if you have questions like these,

God bless,
