Carp report 5/5/09

Carp on the Blue Earth river are insane at the rapidan dam. Looking down from the top of the dam they are just thick in there. I decided to try the fishing out to kill some time and boy it was fun fighting some decent sized carp. All I used was a plain hook filled with corn with some lead weights 6-8 inched from the hook. Cast it out find a rock or two to hold the rod and watch the rod tip it wont take long! I almost lost my rod a few times. Also there are some cats being caught down there. I saw a guy with a stringer of them. From what I could see he was using dead minnows.

Thank you It is about 10-15 mins from Mankato, but its in the small town of Rapidan.

how big of a hook are you using and how big of weights i really wanna have some fun

Not sure on the exact size but a smaller hook to meduim I used 2 different sizes I feel the smaller ones worked better. I used about 3 of the bigger sized sinkers just enough to keep it in place. We got most of ours just 5-10 feet from shore.

Fish of all different sizes. Biggest a couple pushing 10 lbs, but I am waiting to the monster because I know they are in there. Make sure you have heavy duty braid I have 30# power pro and had the bigger carp flipping around on the shore snap the line. It is nice to have a partner down there to help land the thing.

would have been nice if i would have read this before hand 10lb fireline just doesn't cut it do there it wasn't a big success tonite but we caught a few 7outof10 had a nice carp probably double digits that was released by me when i was trying to land it for him sorry mike i caught another carp bout 4 or 5 lbs and i also caught my first cat ever  he was huge

Good to hear Kyle! Yeah those carp sure do flop around on the shore and snap the line easy. Carpin is sure a fun thing to do once and a while!

yea i had my bow along just in case i could see one but theres no way to even think bout shootin at one do you know of any good creeks right now that have some in that we could hit up

No I don't but try looking on google maps. Is it legal to bowfish on that river?

Have "bow" will travel  Of course its legal,only restrictions is in designated muskie waters.Bow fishing will only get better as we approach June.

I have a bow too but I know there are some restrictions on some lakes that are close to citys or towns. So I wasn't sure about the rivers. Thanks for the info. Travel down here! maybe a bowfishing GTG??

I would'nt think you would have a problem,heck I shoot fish in St Paul,Maplewood,suburbs etc.As long as the arrow is "tetherd" its allowed,but if the damn is within city limits best check with your local DNR to be sure.

its legal i called but you can't see a darn thing in that water lol i like the idea of a bowfishing gtg sounds fun meet halfway somewhere or something
