this deer is 225 yards out in front of you to the left. no problem you think, but there is a 30mph swirling wind. do you shoot or pass?

I do a lot of walking and stalking these days.  I don't have a scope on my 30.06 anymore.  I would pass on this shot and try to move closer (from down wind).

If I had a good scope, and had target practiced from that distance, I would seriously consider the shot.

Not a huge fan of the angle but I am confident my 308 will bust through the front shoulder and pop the lungs on the way through. Swirling wind I dont know tough decision would sure love to have to make it though.

I'd wait, no hurry.  From the elevation shown in the photograph, I'd try to get it in closer, or move in.  I don't know what the animal is behind him (a doe likely), and would be concerned that the shot would deflect upon hitting bone or shoulder.  Besides, Dennis might be stalking the buck from the other side.  Dangerous shot from that angle.

With a good set of sticks, and a rangefinder I would pop the bullet right through the shoulder.

A 30 mile an hour wind does worry me, but I believe I could make this shot with; good rest, scope, rangefinder. Without these I wouldn't even try with that wind.
Marry an outdoors woman. Then if you throw her out into the yard on a cold night, she can still survive.

Wait for the doe to clear and pop that cap.  We practice in the wind just for this shot.

id take it, no doubt...unless I was sure it would come closer on its own.   Im cofortable enough with my shot that im sure Id hit at least the lungs.

  • The brothers with my 2006 buck.
From my stand I would drop one into the shoulder. Standing with no rest it would be rough. I am sure if I saw that buck I would find a rest quick though!

Wait.  First, doe is in the wrong spot.  Second, I don't practice at 200 yds.  Gotta get closer.

I would wait till he got closer , I can't use my 30-06 down here.I would be toting my muzzle around so who knows?
