Wade and I skipped out of work early on Friday and headed up to the Pond. We got up there around 3 PM and had missed the major rain. We had a buddy up there with two kids and a friend of his in the boat and they had already caught some nice keepers. We had all got a cabin at Appledornes Resort. Very nice place and they do a great job of taking care of you.
So we got up, checked in and got our tractor ride out on the lake to launch the boat. We started off hitting the mud. Took a little time but Wade pulled in a nice, very close to 25" eye as the first fish.
This was a good way to break in Wades new boat. We also got it pretty wet on the run to the mud. So we fished the mud for a while longer and didn't manage anything else. Got a call from our buddy that he was on the rocks and catching them so we headed back over to the rocks. We managed a few in the 20" mark and one at 18.5" (dang 1/2" over the slot!) and picked up one keeper for the night. With the night ban in effect we were back to the cabin by 10 and cleaning fish and shooting the breeze for a while before bed.
Saturday morning we were up at 5:30 and out to the rocks by 6:30 in the morning. There was a very good bite going in the morning on Saturday. We picked up a few keepers in the first couple of hours of fish. Rich's (our buddy) boat was out fishing us but was fun to be catching fish. Wade and I picked up back to back 22" eyes, didn't take pics of those though. We saw a boat coming at us and kidded someone was bringing us pizza. Turned out to be our buddies that have a cabin up there bring us home made egg mcmuffins!! Who gets service like that?
After a few keepers and the bight slowing down we decided to go north to the mud. We got up to the mud after a pretty wet ride. As we got further out to the north west the waves got bigger and were hitting the 3' mark. We fish out there for a while and I managed a really nice 23" eye.
Well we meandered around the mud till about 2 PM testing a few different spots and getting a few fish that were too big to keep (not a bad problem to have). We headed in at ten and cleaned up. Some other friends have a cabin near by and had invited us over for a fish fry. We got over there and had some great food and shared some stories. These folks always welcome us into their home when we are up in the area. Great people to be around for sure. We we gorged for a while and then decided to head back out around 6 PM.
We hit the rocks again and of course Rich's boat started catching right away. Wade and I weren't as lucky as we only picked up one keeper. We decided to head up to another place and try some slip bobbering. We ended up with one keeper fish and a few short perch and one short eye. Got in just before ten and met up with the others who got a few more keepers. We were all pretty tired and hit the bed a little earlier on Saturday.
Sunday morning we were up and at it early again. Only had about three hours to fish as most of us had to make the wives happy and get our tails home. Wade and I didn't manage a keeper on Sunday but Rich's boat pulled through and got some more. We headed in at a little after nine. Rich called ahead and his trailer was waiting for him at Appledornes to load his boat. Then he got Wade's trailer and it was loaded. Fish were cleaned and the cabin was packed up. We ended up with 24 keepers for the weekend so were right at our limit for the six of us. Great time on the water as well as off the water with good friends.
Bite is on up there folks. If you want some good walleye fishing and chances at some huge fish, now is a great time to head up. We caught the majority of our fish on #6 Red Gamakatzu Hooks on 10-12' snells with jumbo leeches. I changed up a little and would run a chartruse hook or add a rattle bead and caught a few like that but hands down the best bet was the long snell and red hook. Rocks were the hot area's for us for keepers but the big fish came out on the mud for sure.
