yesterday, I had the most memorable times in the field with my oldest boy I have had to date.
we went duck hunting with my buddy Goose and brother Steve, along with my son Dan.
we headed out north of Deer River, MN and found a northern tip of a lake which was loaded with rice, AND ducks.
it was dark when we pulled in there. well before shooting hours.
we were push polling our way through the rice to our blind spot, when my son said "dad, you hear that"? how could I not. the sound, like watter pouring over flat rocks, became louder and louder until it sounded like a full blown waterfall !!
he hit the spot light and the birds were every where. they were in there in HUGE numbers and in a big hurry to exit.
they were so thick they were running in to each other litterally!
they were running into us. I had two of them hit me with their wings! Dan said he could have grabbed one bird out of the sky.
this went on for about three or four minutes, until things calmed down and each bird found it's way into the black sky.
I told Dan, "that's why they call them "ducks"
not many birds returned, as I believe its an evening feeding area, but they may not be back at all because the ice was slamming the door shut on that back water.
we ended up with two birds yesterday. we should have had three but we dropped one in the cats that we could not find, and we looked hard.
I just wish we would have had a video camera for that one. it will live on in our memories for years. I believe when Dan is an old man, he will be telling his young grandsons about way back when the birds were so thick they nearly knocked he and great grandpa out of the boat!! :)

Neat story. I have found a few spots that have rice up north and it seems that they really hit those areas hard at night!

I found a good rice feild around Ely. We spotted it and went back for the night hunt. We were done it about 10 mins after settign our decoys. If you find them I would not even waste your time hunting them in the morning I would wait tell night!
