I am getting excited for early goose. I flocked my 17 floters both heads and tails tonight and they look great! My 4doz full bodies are ready to go, my dog is getting antsy and the ground blinds are in working order. I would like to get some opinions on my opening morning hunt. Here is my prediciment -

My boss decided that it would be a good Idea to have a manditory meeting from 7-9am on Saturday morning. I am thinking of heading to a lake that I have permision to, directly from work. It is a 120 acre lake with 2 houses and 2 farms on it. I figure I can be set up by 10 am. The lake does roost about 50-60 birds but In the past most of the birds in the area use ponds arround the lake for their night time roost and from the scouting I have done that is the case this year as well. I am hopeing that I can get a few birds to decoy mid day after they feed. Sunday and Monday will be spent in fields, as I perfer to hunt on solid ground.

The area I am in is not a "hot Spot", but there are a few hundred birds in the 10 mile radious and I have permission to both the lake and oats fields (none of the fields have had birds in them for the last 2 weeks). With having to go to that meeting I can not go as far, so I am restricted to that area.

The questions I have are - Do you think I will be to late to the lake? Would you hunt a secondary roost on opening day? Do you think I would be better off hunting fields? What would you do?

Thanks for your opinions and good luck!

From what I have learned they come off the water pretty late some times. Like about 8:30 or 9:00. So you might be a little late for the water hunt. But you never know, if it is a full moon they might be feeding in the fields all night and come into the water about then.

Geez that kinda shoots the opening morning shoot, what the heck is your boss thinking?might as well cruze your hunting area (after the meeting) to see if the birds have been pushed or jumped, and see where they are, won't take more than a day or two to educate them, late afternoon setup in the oat field.

heres how i see it, the geese leave the marsh i hunt early like a hour after day break. then they back around 9-10am, so i really dont know, maybe what snow said a evening hunt in the oats would be best, you may be way to late to hunt the water, but things happen. im hoping to be on the water saturday morning, depending on if the boss lets me off work.

I have been racking my brain about this for about a week and I keep going round and round on what to do. I can always hunt the water for the afternoon and move to the field for the evining if nothing is happening... Heck I don't know. I am banking on the birds leaving the water before I get there and hoping that they come back once they feed. Does that sound crazy? I have done well in the past hunting the lake between 9 and noon. I have decided that I will hunt on Saturday for sure VS scout. I have the itch bad and being in my truck on opening day VS being in the blind would dive me crazy. I am going out to do some scouting Tomorrow evining to hopefully have a "ah-ha" moment. We will see... Any other input would be great! Anyone else getting excited?
