The Minnesota Tournament Trail Championship was held here this past Thursday and Friday. Thursday’s weather cooperated and so did the fish. Most of the field kept their limit of Walleye, along with 5 boats finding a big Walleye over the 28 inch mark. Tom and Jon Guerkink came in with 23 pounds and some change, including two fish over 28 inches, to lead all boats for the first day. Around 3 inches of rain overnight and strong northwest winds made fishing tough on Friday. Most of the field fished in the Rainy River, which was mudded up from the previous night’s rain. The current was blowing as well. Tom and Jon held on with ease to first place; bringing home a new Skeeter Boat. Thanks to the MTT staff and all the participants. Congrats on another great season for the tournament trail!

After all the rain and wind, the river and lake is still muddy in areas. It is clearing up, and water levels are nearing normal. We have been seeing some Emerald Shiners in the river all month, but all small in size. The past few days a few of the big shiners have started to show up, but not in big numbers. The water temperature in the river is down to 51 degrees. Better Walleye reports are beginning to come from anglers fishing the river, and there are good numbers of Walleye just out from the Lighthouse Gap. As the river clears up in the next few days, the action should pick up quick.

Our charters have been fishing where the weather has let them this past week. The guides try to hide from the wind a little if possible. With some of the water on the south end of the lake stirred up, we’ve been working the areas with cleaner water. Guests have been filling limits of fish anchoring and jigging or drifting with live bait on the charters. Our guides have been on the Walleye from Long Point to Zipple Bay to the Lighthouse Gap and also in the Rainy River. It’s been a lot of keeper fish, but the trophy Walleyes over 28 inches have been showing up. The big fish of the week was caught yesterday. A heavy 30 inch Walleye weighing around 11.5 pounds!

We’ll be hosting the first annual Chili Bowl fishing tournament on October 16th. It’ll be a fun one day tournament with a professional weigh in process. The entry fee is $100 per 2 person team. There’s a max of 50 boats allowed, so sign up quick. For more info on the tournament and how to enter click here or call the lodge.

All signs are pointing towards some great fall fishing from here on out. Don’t miss out this year!

Fish On!
