There’s been a lot of talk about the annual fall shiner run. Everyone wants to know if the shiners and Walleye are in the river yet. The answer is YES. We are seeing schools of Emerald Shiners night in and night out in our minnow net. The numbers of shiners moving through this section of the Rainy River has been fair to good. At times they have been thick and other times spotty at best. Most of them are running small to average sized, but some real nice sized ones are mixing in. One can assume there’s some big schools of shiners just out from the Gap working their way towards the river.

Fishing has been good all over. Most of our charters have been sticking to the main lake. Depending on the wind, we’ve been fishing from Long Point to Zipple Bay to the eastern Canadian line out from the Lighthouse Gap. Fishing is good out deep in 25-30 feet of water. There have been some great reports in shallower just out from the Gap in 15-20 feet of water too. It seems the river bite is getting better and better each day, with the most consistent bite in the mornings and evenings. However, the amount of current continues to fluctuate throughout every day. Most folks are using a ½ oz to ¾ oz jig to deal with the swift current in the river. Gold, chartreuse, green, and pink have been the go to jig colors tipped with a frozen or live shiner.

The ten day forecast looks dry and sunny. The weatherman is calling for temps in the low 60’s all week. Hopefully the wind can cooperate as well. That would be nice for a change! But, with the river bite picking up, the wind isn’t as much of a concern anymore. October has started off with some great fishing, and it should only get better from here on out!

DON’T FORGET! We’ll be hosting the first annual Chili Bowl fishing tournament on October 16th. It’ll be a fun one day contest with a professional weigh in process. The entry fee is $100 per 2 person team. There’s a max of 50 boats allowed. For more info on the tournament and how to enter click here or call the lodge
