The 2010 – 2011 hard water season is coming together very well after the ice blew in last week. We walked out about 100 yards yesterday and found 3 inches of ice as a minimum. There were a few spots that had 4 and some shelf ice underneath. I hope that we do not have that crap under the ice out on the fishing grounds. Last year if you fished out on the humps at all, you can remember that there was a lot of slush under the ice all year long. When you would catch a walleye, you would have to clean out your hole after every fish. I can remember in years past having to deal with that shelf ice, it is not pretty.

You would be reeling up a fish and the ice would be floating around and would cover the underside of the hole and the fish would hit that ice and would more than likely get off. Let’s just hope that is not the case this year. I heard that over in Isle they have a mountain range all the way from Half Moon Island to Big Point. That will not be easy to get through and I am glad it did not happen down here, because it very well could have. We are ready to fish, all of the houses have been fired and cleaned and are just waiting for the ice to form. With the next four to five days and nights being close to zero, we should put down a few inches of really good ice.

We ended up with 4 to 5 inches of snow on Friday into Saturday. That will insulate the ice a bit, but we should still put down ice never the less. Just keep thinking cold and no snow and we could get out with the smaller houses by just before Xmas. That is it for now at Rock Central I will be updating again on Thursday for those of you that are itching to get out with snowmobiles and four wheelers. We will see what we get for ice this week.
