tip ups

 Looking over my tip ups  I was wondering if any of you guys take yours apart and if you do what do you use on the shafts as far lube  to keep them moving easy and keep them from freezing? Thanks for any info

Good question. I for one have never put any kind of lube on my tip ups. I'm always very leary about putting any kind of lube on stuff like this for the simple reason of leaving residue in the water and posibly scaring away the fish?? I normally don't have a problem with my tip ups freezing or moving freely. I always buy the cheapos so If they do go hay wire I just shell out another 10 bucks and buy a new one.

The BeaverDam tip-ups are sealed, but are serviceable.... you can send them in every few years to get re-lubed.... its pretty cheap too!

     I just thought I would mention this as a warning.  To stay on topic I usually don't have a problem with a tip up unless it gets froze to deep.  I have bent the shaft when it was really cold and did not check it enough. It is amazing how fast a hole will freeze  over when it really chilly out.  Cut them out versus jerking them out.       If you are  are planning on tip up fishing with spiderwire or fireline make sure you keep your gloves on.  I have been cut with braid.  This new  stuff on a good run will cut quick and deep.   Keep that in mind

I know of a few guys on lake of the woods that every time the reel up they spray their presentation with wd 40 and drop it back down they swear by the stuff say it works,problem is is that wd40 quit using seal and whale oil in thier recipe but they still use the stuff so maybe that would be enough to lube up your gear.

 I dont have to much trouble just once in a while freeze up. I take mine apart then blow out the moisture in the tube and reinstall the spool shaft then im usually good for a while again. I was thinking about wd 40 but I was worried about film in the water.

I have never tried it, but for me I would buy it and use it once, then when I needed it again I wouldn't be able to find it. One hot summer day I would be cleaning out the garage and find it stored somewhere oozed out all over with dirt and bugs stuck to it.

 The other night I was watching tv and I think it was in fisherman was on and they were talking about some kind of lube you could buy and now that you say frabil sells it the memory bells are ringing and I guess I didnt dream it up.

I have used the frabill stuff. Every couple year or every couple, depending on how much I use my tipups, I relube them. I have had them freeze up before, but never since I've taken the time to relube. It only takes a couple minutes and can mean the difference between fish and no fish as they will feel a hard to pull spool.
