Shoot several different ones at the range and go from there.
I thing feel and noise are more important than speed.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

I would look at them all at a archery shop. Shoot the ones you like. I have a Hoyt that I love! It is a Carbon element. Said and done though it was about 2K.... For the $$ the Bowtec Destroyer is an awesome bow! My son who is an avid hunter shoots the PSE Bow Maddness XS and he loves that bow. There are about 3 pricebreaks for bows...$300, $600, $900 and up. figure about another 500 for arrows, rest, release, quiver, sight...

The biggest decision you have to start with is how much you want to spend??

If your near the Harris area check out Full Draw Archery....That where I went to get mine. Great guys!!
