We have 9 mineral licks.  A couple may be in bow range after the trees lose their leaves.  Mostly they are used for the deers benefit and to keep them coming through the area.

i have them 20-25 yards from my tree. its best to put them just off the trail the deer use, that way they find it faster than way off the beaten path. i dont bury mine at all, i just put it where i want it and leave it. i put one by my other bow stand last thursday, i havent had one there sense last august and they hit it right away the first night. i had 49 pictures that night and as far as i can tell theres atleast 12 different deer in the pics, 7 of them are smaller bucks. as far as other attractants i dont mess with that stuff much anymore, i bought trophy rock for the first time 2 years ago and it made a beleiver out of me. i use to use the other stuff in the off season like acorn rage(nothing touched it) cmere deer power(cant hunt over that i think) you get more for your money with trophy rock as well in my opinion. plus some of the other attractants you have to be cafeful about because some of them fall under baiting laws..

lentz, be careful with apples.  Remember all residue must be removed 10 days (or so) prior to hunting the location.

if i was you lentz i would just not put the apples out, let them concentrate on the trophy rock, if the apples are gone in 2 days then that means the deer  use that area pretty regular so the trophy rock should be good enough. maybe pour the deer cane over it(liquid?)

ya kind of like come er deer(sp) i would try and leave the trophy rock the way it is for a few days, then pour the deer cane over the trophy rock and see if the deer traffic to the rock increases. seems like a decent idea.
