Ice Report 12/9 and 12/10

Fished the south shore Sat. and Sun Morn.  Yesterday we found ice from 6 inches all the way to 3 feet (ice was stacked over each other).  This morning we went out 3/4 of a mile and found a crack that was at least 2 feet wide.  We ended up fishing the crack  .  Please be careful out there as the ice is not consistant. Below are a couple pics from the weekend.

that is what I am talking about.
when the winds get blowing hard and steady it will open things up in a hurry.
some might think that first picture is pretty scarry, but I can tell you felt confident where you were.
the thing is, if it starts moving, you will know it and you can get your  butt back on the shore side, as long as you are close enough to it.
but when you are a mile away and she moves, you might not have time to get across. you will likely hear it and feel it, but you might find yourself on the short end of a long jump.

in case you do get stuck in this kind of a situation, keep the sno machine or atv back away from the crack and parrallel the crack looking for a safer place to cross. you might have to travel a ways.
most of all use your brain when out there. also trust your guts. if it dont feel good, you probably shouldnt be doing it.
times like this it is best to fish with a buddy for so many reasons.

  We caught a jumbo perch!!  We were talking about doing some trolling if we would have had some other equipment along!!!

Thats a nice crack,  I wonder how far it goes around to the east, it isn't present here out of Waskish yet. We have anywhere from 8 to 15 inches here, with the lesser amount out further. Was a few fishermen out to 3 miles on sleds and wheelers. Walleyes seem to be biting better out there right now.

Friday am December 22 2006
We have made more ice this week with
12-1/2 to 15" out front here. Going
is good with light trucks and small
wheel houses. Probably be next week
for heavier trucks and the 18-20'
houses. The walleye bite has been
good just 1/4 mile out in 8' water.
Just a few crappie showing up, this
is typical December fishing. More
small pike than big, last January
was the hot big pike bite here.

    The ice conditions are very good here, most everyplace I checked yesterday was at least 15 inches, there are still a few places around the broken ice piles that I do not completely trust yet with my truck.
    By this time next week we should have just about all of the fish houses out of storage and on the lake, with just about everyone targeting walleyes in the shallow water things could get kind of crowded out there. We do have a couple of fishermen out in the deeper water where we use to catch a lot of crappies but so far all they are catching is walleyes.
    Ever since we have had enough ice to walk out on I have been eating Red Lake walleye just about everyday, about all I can say is as good as they taste you will soon forget about chasing a few crappies (MAYBE NOT), as soon as someone stumbles onto a school of slab crappies we will see a lot of houses move.

We (Agassiz) put a bridge out today at 4 pm across the pressure ridge at 3 miles. Drove out more than a mile, ice 16 inches thick in 12-13 feet of water. Someone should be able to find some crappies now. But the walleyes are committing suicide in 7 feet so fishermen will probably  get bored out there in a hurry and come back in for the catching if they don't find much out farther.

Hey "Pray For the Fish" - What kind of operation you have up there for the ice season? How many houses and what are your prices like? Do you have a website? I am sure there are a lot of people on MNO looking to hit Red this winter......

I have 7 sleeper fishhouses at $45 per night per person, all days are the same price. Bait, tackle, offsale. Shower and fishcleaning room in bait shop. Brand new hotel rooms, finishing them as I am able. Right now I have one done, another one by about jan.4th, another by jan. 15th. Rooms are $100 per night, minimum based on 4 people, $25 each person extra. They have either 5 or 6 single beds (twin size) and one double(queen size) in each room. Fridge, coffee pot, microwave. Each has private bath. Lounge downstairs where you can cook your own fish or pizza. As soon as I get the rooms finished  I'll get to work finishing the bar which will hopefully be ready by the May opener.
