                             DNR  enforcement report.

CO Ben Huener (Roseau) stayed busy with the firearms deer season. Multiple trespass complaints were investigated and charges are pending for illegally taking a deer on posted private land. Enforcement action was taken and firearm seized for an individual who chased a deer with a motor vehicle and then got out to shoot at the deer from the roadway in front of the officer. Enforcement action was also taken on a man who tagged a deer with a fishing license and then failed to register the deer before processing. Hunter activity was slow during the second weekend of deer season with freezing rain making conditions miserable.

CO Jeff Birchem (Baudette) reported that deer hunters were greeted with high winds and very dangerous icy road conditions the second weekend. A few kids were observed skating on a gravel road. Hunters that braved the elements seemed to have good success. CO Birchem spent time checking anglers on the Rainy River along with some late season duck hunters. The last of the ducks appear to be on Lake of the Woods for the season. Enforcement action for the week included shooting off the road, trespass, untagged deer, and transporting loaded firearm on an ATV.

CO Jeremy Woinarowicz (Thief River Falls) attended emergency vehicle operations training and continued to monitor deer and wolf hunting activity. Calls of shooting big game animals from the road, trespass, and hunters without blaze orange were investigated. Enforcement action for the week included leave stand in WMA, untagged big game animal, no blaze orange during firearms deer season, shoot from road right of way at big game, and multiple transport loaded firearms violations.

CO Angie Warren (Thief River Falls) worked deer hunting and ATV activity. Calls of possible trespass, illegally taken deer, deceased deer found in back yard, and baiting activity were investigated. Questions were answered in regards to the wolf hunt, deer licenses and permits. Hunters reported fair to good success rates but ice and poor weather slowed hunting activity for the final weekend. Multiple vehicle hit deer permits were issued.

CO Keith Backer (Blackduck) worked the deer season and related complaints. Follow up was conducted on illegal ATV operation and road hunting complaints. Waterfowl hunters were checked with a few mallards and divers still in the area. Area trappers were checked and numerous questions on the wolf trapping season were answered. Enforcement activity for the week included transport loaded firearms in motor vehicles and illegal trail operation.

CO Robert Gorecki (Baudette) monitored hunting and trapping activity throughout the week. Deer hunters are reporting poor hunting success, but harvested deer were still observed throughout the week. Trespassing complaints, shining complaints, and shooting from roadway calls were handled. Hunters are reminded that all deer must be tagged before being transported to your deer camp.
