Over the weekend I was fishing on mille lacs.  We set up the house at the bottom of the drop off on the west side of 8 mile flat.  At 10 pm we were not marking any fish so we set up tip ups on top of the flat and took turns watching for flags while the other slept.  We caught several 22-25 inch fish throughout the night.  Well at somepoint I fell asleep at the watch and woke up just as it was starting to get light.  1 of my friends flags was up.  No minnow and no fish.  I checked my tipups and both of them were drifted in and could not pop up.  I started pulling the first tip up out and there was a lot of line out and it felt like I had one on.  What a mess, the fish had wrapped up both of my lines and made a huge mess.  As I am pulling the fish in I come to a rats nest and a plain red hook on Cajun red mono so the fish must be on the other tip up that has now popped up with me fighting the fish.  I was pretty sure that the fish was hooked on the other tip up so I just cut the line and drop it back down the hole and pull in the fish on the other line.  I then go to the other tip up and start pulling the fish in and get to the huge rats nest and finally get the big fish in the hole and she is hooked in the edge of the lip(only walleye not to instantly swallow the hook).  We take a quick photo and send her back down the hole.  As I'm cutting and retying the lines I realize that the hole I pulled the fish out of was the tip up that was the  one that had the red mono on it.  I had actually cut the line that was hooked to the fish.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.
