    • Fishing & Hunting South Dakota's Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe
I took another one of my repeat customers Tom Wheeler and his son fishing spending the first day down on Sharpe and then spent the next two days on Oahe. The fishing at West Bend/Sharpe was an easy 75 fish day and we kept 12 nice walleye with around a 17 inch avg. size. We caught these fish in around 17 fow on Night crawlers and Berkeley gulp pumpkin seed fry's on bottom/Bouncers. I actually favor the Gulp as you catch just as many fish but the fish seem to be easier to release as more of them are lip hooked and do not swallow the bait as much as they do on night crawlers so you have to cut a lot less hooks to release the ones you do not want to keep. The same is true when fishing with plugs or minnows. We then caught limits of walleye and a few bass in around 17 fow on Oahe using the same presentation. We did catch some fish on leech's. They had just two over fish and a lot of the bonus fish but were able to take home their full 48 walleye possession limits so they will be enjoying some real nice fish dinners back home in Omaha NE. The bite is excellent for numbers on both Oahe and Sharpe but you have to catch and release a lot of fish to end up with quality stringers. All in all most anglers seem to be having fun as it is not uncommon to catch 25 to 50 fish a day making up some for the numbers of the smaller year class fish that are jumping on the bait all up and down Oahe. The lake is busy so be prepared to see a lot of trailers at boat ramps and at fish cleaning stations. Self contained electric knife's or regular filet knife's are time savers at cleaning station's (no waiting for a plug in) and a good fly repellant is a plus in your boat especially if you like wearing Bermuda shorts.
