Water levels in the Ely area are down about 15-20 inches, but all are ice free and marker buoys are in.
In spite of the low levels, fishing should be good with the current forecast.
Lakes in the Ely area do not have the severe restrictions on Walleye limits that other lakes in the state are under, which could hurt tourism in many places.
Good luck to all this season!!  :happy1:

By the way. With the low water levels in the Ely area looks like Joe's Marine in Ely will be busy. Props, skags, and lower units will be in high demand.

What's the shiner outlook for Ely this spring?

What's the shiner outlook for Ely this spring?
Shiner outlook is about the same as everywhere else, not too good.
Every source of shiners must be tested for VHS, and dealers must have a statement of origin to haul them.
Lake Winnie only allows trapping Shiners until May 22nd (?), then it cannot be trapped again until  October.
Every year the DNR puts more regulations on bait trapping and fishing, which will eventually drive some bait dealers and resorts out of business.
