          Question of the week

Q: If I purchase a hunting or fishing license on the DNR website, do I need to keep a printed copy with me out in the field?

A:  If you're using a home computer, you can print most licenses and you need to keep a copy with you when participating in the activity. In cases where the license has a tag, the license will be mailed to you, and you must have the license in possession.

Licenses purchased on a mobile device are issued in electronic format, and you can choose to receive an email and/or text message that serves as your license. In that case, you must carry your mobile device or a printed copy of the email or text message for proof.

In some cases individuals can't make it to a non-local tackle shop and or also may be pressed for time. I see it as a optional convince for many. This would also help out the folks from out of state that are planning a trip to MN.

Other than that you could contact Steve Michaels, DNR licensing program director and ask him  :doah:

Maybe greatoutdoors could answer a question here. I remember years back that the bait stores would get a 25 cent issuing fee for each license they sold in Illinois. I was also told that they had to purchase the books of licensees up front out of pocket. At seasons end the DNR would not refund them for leftover license books. Instead you just got a credit on next years license books.

Some shops would not sell you a license unless you were purchasing something else with it. I wonder if there is still an issuing fee to the bait shop and if so how much. At that time there were no computers being used.

Lee,
With the computerized licensing system, we get a $1 fee for every license sold, but nothing for trout stamps.  The DNR does not pay this, the person buying the license is charged the extra $1 at the time of purchase.
With the old book system, we'd still get $1 per license but had to pay for the book when we picked it up, unless you were bonded, which would enable us to "charge" the purchase, and send in the payment whenever all licenses (10) in a book were sold.
The old system involved a lot more paperwork for us.
