:police: Ask a conservation officer:

Don’t use game fish for bait :doah:

Q: My friend caught a small sunfish and decided to re-hook it to his line and use it to catch larger fish. Is that OK?

A: No. In Minnesota, the use of game fish, goldfish or carp, or part of those fish, for bait is illegal. Some states do allow this but Minnesota is not one of them. In addition, if you wish to catch minnows and leeches to use as your own bait, you can only take enough for personal use (no commercial bait operations without the proper permit) and they cannot be taken from waters infested with invasive species. For more information, see page 21-24 of the 2015 Fishing Regulation synopsis book.
