                                Conservation Officer Report:

:reporter; Several ATVs, trucks fall through ice

Mar 16, 2017

Conservation officer Mark Mathy (Cass Lake) spent the week monitoring angling activity. Anglers reported moderate success. Ice is becoming unsafe in areas, several all-terrain vehicles and trucks reported going through the ice on Leech Lake.

Officer Duke Broughten (Longville) assisted local law enforcement with fisherman and an ATV through the ice. Reports of fishing success in the area slowed with colder temperatures. Lake ice was variable with strong ice in some mid lake areas yet weak in shallow areas with current or submerged vegetation. Caution is advised as the forecasted warmer temperatures will melt away the current ice quickly. Enforcement action was taken for ATV violations.

Officer Jeff Halverson (Staples) worked fishermen, ATVs, and had an otter turned in that was accidently taken. CO Halverson assisted with "reality day" at Staples High School. One fish house was left on an area lake, follow-up was completed.

Officer Amber Ladd (McGregor) assisted the McGregor fourth-graders in making jiggle sticks and learning about ice safety.

Officer Bob Mlynar (Aitkin) fielded nuisance beaver concerns. The Laser shot system and Mini Wall of Shame were manned at the Aitkin Commerce and Sports Show.

Officer Eric Sullivan (Pequot Lakes) checked
