Red pine saplings next to a board with their height
Nursery Seedling Orders Begin Oct. 15

The countdown has begun and there is just one month to go before we start taking orders for the 2019 spring tree sale!

Large, 12-24 inch red pine seedlings are one of the many seedlings available to order starting October 15, 2018 at the State Forest Nursery.

Visit the Minnesota State Forest Nursery for up-to-date information or call us at 800-657-3767.

Mark your calendar to order early for best selection!

Thanks,

State Nursery Staff

Since 1933, Minnesota's State Forest Nursery has provided over 1 billion healthy, native tree and shrub seedlings for Minnesota plantings. With over 85 years of experience, we have developed methods to achieve the best seedling stock possible.

Seedlings are kept in the ground long enough to develop robust root systems and healthy stems. Depending on species, coniferous seedlings between 2–4 years of age and deciduous seedlings are between 1–3 years of age when sold.

We also sell transplants, which are seedlings that are moved at two years of age to a larger bed to promote growth. These seedlings develop strong fibrous roots and thicker stems, making them ideal for challenging sites.

Every seedling is inspected to meet high standards for height, diameter, root development, and health. Only the best seedlings are sold.

Ordering begins Oct. 15, 2018.

Trees for All Seasons

Is there anything trees can't do?

They cool us in the summer and shelter us from Minnesota's notorious winter winds. They are home for countless critters and a fighter of global warming. Trees provide nature's perfect raw material. They help keep surface water clean and provide everything from aspirin to the roof over your head. Planting trees is one sure way you can have a positive, long-lasting impact on the environment.

How many trees will I need?

Proper spacing for your trees is critical. Because tree seedlings are small, there is a tendency to plant them too close together. Keep in mind the mature size of the trees you will plant, and space them far enough apart so you can maintain them with your equipment. Please refer to the following table to figure out how many trees you will need.

Windbreaks/shelterbelts

Shrubs: 6 feet apart in rows
Trees: 10 feet apart in rows with rows 15 feet apart   Wildlife planting
Mixed plantings of shrubs and trees average 10 feet apart in rows and between rows (about 500 seedlings per acre*).   Fiber production
Average spacing of 8 feet apart in rows, and 9 feet between rows (about 700 seedlings per acre).
*An acre is approximately 200 feet by 200 feet

And they drop leaves all over my yard a foot deep in Fall. Costs me money to clean up.  :mad1:

But, they provide food for others.  :puke:
