    • Fishing & Hunting South Dakota's Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe
I have been on the water most days fishing Oahe and limits are the norm on the big lake. The walleye are being caught anywhere from 5 fow out to 30 fow depending on what bait the fish are chasing. The smelt are deeper (around 25 fow to 30 fow ) so if they are around the fish are out there but there is a lot of shad/other bait shallow so many times the best depths are around 10 fow to 15 fow or even shallower. I have been catching limits of walleye with some smallmouth and northern mixed in on different nightcrawler rigs but minnows, leeches and pulling plugs all work. There is a bite on Sharpe also but this year the ratio of 15 inch slot limit fish to under 15 is poor so you have to put a lot of fish in the boat to keep a limit. That will change after July 1st so then limit fishing will be much easier on Sharpe. I helped the Outpost Lodge with the yearly trip of the BPI group and they had good weather all 4 days and fishing was great so everyone caught lots of fish. I will post a picture of the last groups 1st day and if you look close you will see some bigger fish mixed in but the over all avg. is around 16 to 17 inchers. This is just a super bunch and all of us guides along with the Outpost are sure glad to have them back every year. A big thank you to BPI for your business from all of us. Fishing is in full summer mode and is very good so trips now should bring home great results. Fly spray and sun screen along with plenty of water are starting to come into play.
