from Red Lake in December 2016 was shared on the Outdoor News page a few days ago, and even though three years old, it has been drawing a lot of attention across social media these days as ice safety is always timely and relevant. So here's to remembering – in the new year and beyond – what can happen on the ice, and make sure to pay attention to your surroundings each time you venture on and off the ice.

Remember some years back when my fishing buddy and I were out on Peltier, and it was really making ice. *CRACK*BOOM* We'd taken along my young neighbor, who'd never ice fished. He was nervous as a cat at the cracking and booming. So of course me and my buddy decided to have some fun....told him if there ever was a really loud crack, and someone yelled RUN! to take off, becuz that meant the ice split and was sinking. I was out at the truck grabbing some goodies later that afternoon, when there was huge CRACK between the truck and shack. So of course I yelled RUN! The kid came thru that door like a rocket, sending tackle everywhere, and jumped up on the truck tailgate. We laughed so hard (and everyone around us too) I thought I was gonna wee in my ice suit.
