This huge red oak went down during one of the many windy days we had this fall.
I'm going to try to harvest the logs but it may be more than my little 18" saws can handle.
Of course it fell smack dab across a trail. The other option is to divert the trail around the log.
It may be hollow and not worth anything or solid and a lot of great wood. Or perhaps spalted
in which case it's a gold mine. If all fails, it's one hell of a grouse drumming log.

That tree looks huge.  How big around is the trunk and how tall from the base to the first crotch?

Maybe there is a guy in your area with a portable mill that could help you decide best how to utilize it.

A friend of mine has one.  He makes lumber from green and black ash on my property.  He makes all kinds of fancy tables and furniture.  Turns bowls and vases from tree crotches.  Nice stuff.  I going with him to check out this tree and a few others tomorrow.  He has a chain saw with a 36" blade.
