Winter BWCA Camping

I will be heading into the BWCA the weekend of 3/16 to 18 for some winter camping, laker fishing and in general getting lost in the woods. 

Does anyone know if I am obligated to camp in the designated campgrounds in wintertime?

i would guess that you are... call the dnr quick and let us know.

I don't remember, but I think it used to be that during the winter you could camp where you want and not have to stick with the established sites.

Where are you headed Nanook?

I don't think you have to. When I went I never even seen a campsite, we just set up camp right on the lake.

You don't have to camp in a designated campsite.  In fact, depending on the Forest Service person you talk to, they usually encourage you to camp elsewhere.

You DO NEED a permit.  You simply fill out a self-issue permit at the entry point, and carry the visitor copy with you.  I haven't been checked in a couple of years off-season, but it does happen. 

The normal summer rules about cans and bottles apply.
