I remember the first time we saw one in southern mn in the 70's.  That was a real big deal.  Slowly moving north over the years.

Yep, the first one I saw was dead in the road a few miles north of the Iowa border while pheasant hunting. Early 80’s. Now they’re at least halfway up the state. Armadillos next?

I remember Dad bringing a roadkill possum home back in the mid-60's so we could see what one looked like. They weren't all that common even in southeastern MN. When the winters got rough in the 70's we saw very few. Got to the 80's with warmer winters and seems like they've been on the increase ever since.

It's best to catch them in a live trap and keep them in a cage for a minimum of 3 days. Feed them plenty of corn to kinda clean em out. Try not to get too attached to them during this time period or it will make it hard to butcher them. Clean them much as you would a squirrel. Stuff with onions and celery and Bake them in the oven with a side of sweet potatoes. If you want, you can keep the head attached and  put a small apple in the mouth.
Now that right there is some fine eating!

I did eat a lot of tree rats. Mom's squirrel fried in lard was the best. The wife? Won't touch 'em. More for me. 😋

I had one living in a brushpile behind the house.   It was a little one.  I fed and fattened that little guy for a year until he was big enough to skin and make ear muffs out of.  Very cool fur.
