LAKE OF THE WOODS - Area Tourism Bureau, Denelle Hovde , near Junction of Hwy 11 and Hwy 172 in Baudette, www.lakeofthewoodsmn.com (1-800-382-FISH)

Walleye fishing here at Lake of the Woods continues to have its ups and downs. The beginning of the season was fast and furious however; things have cooled down a bit. The changes in the water levels and the recent bad weather have caused the bite to slow, and the fish have started to move to deeper water. Anglers are having some luck with spinners, drifting with worms and leeches in 21-29 feet of water.

Anglers have had to travel north to find walleye, Garden Island, Little Oak Island, Stony Point, and Four Blocks have been producing some nice numbers.

Sturgeon season opened July 1st, and the Rainy River has already been giving up some whoppers. A large sucker minnow in about 14-15 feet of water has been working well. The water temperature is at 68 degrees, and water clarity is getting better everyday. The walleye are beginning to bite again in the river as well.

Up at the Northwest Angle and Islands the fish are deep, 24 feet or deeper. Anglers have been catching a mix of walleye and northern pike around Oak Island. Some anglers are still doing some bottom bouncing on the reefs just south of Oak Island, and have been finding some nice walleye.
