RAINY LAKE - Rainy Lake Tourism, www.rainylake.org (1-800-FALLS-MN)

Rainy Lake walleye have been hitting in varying depths on the submerged reefs such as those near Blueberry Island and Saginaw Bay in the east end, and community reef or the Fox Islands further west. There are good reports from using shiner minnows or leeches in anywhere from 25 to 40 feet of water. A graph would be very useful for finding the right depth and concentrations of fish. Crappies are a good bet in Black Bay, and the weedy edges around Cranberry Bay is a great spot to try for some smallmouth bass.  Word is the bass have been hitting on flashy lures and plugs cast into the week edges. Crappies are more likely to hit on jigs tipped with small minnows.
Rainy River has had pretty good walleye action near the confluence of the Littlefork River.  Try trolling a shiner or leech on a spinner rig. The blueberry crop has been pretty well picked over, but other later berries are popping out and wildlife should find pretty good forage into the fall. Hot, dry weather has greatly increased fire danger, so be cautious with fire.
