Lake Geneva Report 09/24/07

Monday 09/24 report:
Today I had the pleasure of fishing with Jerry Sedy who's a very accomplished angler. Jerry's fished most places that many of us only dream of. We started out just before daybreak trolling large spinner baits and managed two largemouth's and a few short strikes.

We next upsized to one my favorite standby baits for another pass. Just as we we going to change tactics Jerry's bait stopped dead in the water with the rod bent like a candy cane and the drag zinging. POP! and it was all over. The pike was gone along with my brand new bait that I just took out of the package.

I figured that it was smallie time, so we headed to the other end of the lake where the fishing had been hot recently. It didn't take long and we were visited by a school of migrating smallmouth. The fish seemed to prefer the dead sticking set up over other presentations today. Best action was anchored in 32 fOW. I explained to Jerry that the 25 minute rule was the best way to stay on the fish.


The 25 minute rule is having the patents to wait a good 25 minutes after it seems that the smallies have vacated the area. More times than not they will return to the same spot and the action will begin once again. Many anglers are able to wait them out while others are to antsy and run and gun all day.


We wound up with 31 smallmouth and 2 largemouth today. Every fish wasn't a monster, but many were real dandy's. All game fish in my boat are released on every trip.

Smallmouthguide. Yet another Fawkinnae question for you.

I've noticed that you usually are fishing fairly deep for smallies. It's really been starting to affect how I approach smallmouth fishing. I'm wondering though, under what conditions do fish shallower and shoreline. The reason I ask is I've getting up to Rainy Lake a couple times each summer and I've had some great days - but I'm more likely to fish the shoreline and the fish aren't as big. When I have caught bigger smallmouths it's usually while I'm fishing deeper - for walleyes.

I usually fish 13 fow or less until the 3rd week in June. Then it's out to 21 ft for the 4th week and 26 to 38 in July till Fall. When the water starts to cool down I'll go into 18 ft and still swing out to check the deep stuff.

As Buck Perry ( Godfather of structure fishing) once stated:
