We just got back to Spearfish from spending the day hiking and exploring in the Spearfish Canyon area of the Black Hills National Forest with the Outdoors_Junkies. We explored a couple of different trails that led to beautiful natural waterfalls, historic railroad crossings, and just plain breath taking places deep in the heart of the Black Hills along the Iron Creek.

I have some great pics of the kids swimming and playing in the Devil's Bathtub formation as well as many cool water holes and rapid creek areas along our hikes. I will get some of these pics posted when we get back home later this week and get them downloaded to the computer.

If you have never been to the Black Hills National Forest near Rapid City/Spearfish, I would highly recommend it! There is plenty to do within an hours drive from Rapid City that will entertain everyone in the family.  ;)

It is too late for anyone to plan this yet this year...this Monday October 1st is the annual Custer State Park buffalo round up.  Nearly 9,000 people venture to Custer State Park to watch them round up the buffalo herd.  Make plans to attend one in the future.

The Buffalo were playing a little hide and seek when we were through there. We ended up having to turn off on several of the gravel roads off the main loop and drive for 15 minutes to get to the back side of the area where the Buffalo where hanging out that day. There must have been a couple hundred of them when we did find them. We watched them for about 30-45 minutes traveling back out to their night time area. The big guy in the pics stopped several times to drop and roll in some big scrapes he had made around the loop. It was pretty fun watching them!

So what do they roll around in the scrapes for?

my guess is that they do this to mark their territory or something...lay down some of his scent in it. This big guy stopped, dropped and rolled at 3 different scrape circles as we watched them walk around the base of this large hill...
