The shiners are on the move, and the walleye are beginning to follow. Fishing on Lake of the Woods has been very well the last week. Fish are being found outside Wheeler's Point Gap, around Oak Island, and
north of Garden Island. Gold Rapalas, walleye divers, and anything with red on it seem to be doing well in 18 - 20 feet of water. The rocks around Zipple Bay have been giving up some nice fish in 10 -14 feet of water. The water temperature right now is at 56.3 degrees. Our executive director spent an afternoon fishing near Wheeler's Point were she caught some crappie and lots of small walleye. She also had her first run in with a sturgeon, even though it hit the side of the boat and got away she's still bragging about it.
Fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent, one angler reports non stop action around the rocks at Birchdale. A variety of species have been active in the river lately as the shiners continue to run. Sturgeon season is now closed and is catch and release only. The Northwest Angle and Islands area has been producing some great fishing. Anglers have been limiting out with several 23 - 27 inch walleyes. The crappie bite has also been strong with a 3/8 jig and minnow. Fall is the perfect time to discover everything that Lake of the Woods has to offer. Duck and Goose season is upon us and plenty of birds have been spotted lately. Archery season is in full swing, now is the time to bag that trophy deer or bear.
