Well it's feeling like January out there, it's cold.  Dropping to -30 C (-22 F) overnight and pushing -18C (0 F) if we are lucky during the day we are definately in a cold snap.

The trout bite slowed down with our change in weather but has already rebounded.  All types of bait white tube jigs, gold cleo's, laker takers & buzz bombs are still producing.  If you have a couple of rods keep them on different baits playing with the fish with one bait and suddenly changing to another is often producing a catch,  with 2 or more rods you don't have to mess around trying to change over in the cold. You'll find them in the 40 to 35 foot range.
The return of colder weather has improved ice conditions and lessened the amount of slush.  Trucks have been travelling to the east end since there is a good 13" of ice out there, be careful if thats your method of transportation.  More snow has made sled travel great.

No big fish have weighed in yet for the tournament what is being caught is averaging 7 - 8 lbs but the season is still young.

The morning bite for crappies, especially at the spots closest to town, have been the best lately unless you wish to fish Stevens then that hour before dark is when you want to go.  Small jigs with half a minnow seem to produce the most aggressive bite.  At 40' they are anywhere from 1 to 6' off of bottom.  Fish them right on the bottom in Stevens Bay. Hay Island has slowed down but that doesn't mean it won't change over night.

Now is the time to have that ice hut!
