The eelpout are starting, the perch are getting active, and the pannies are starting to get into late ice mode. Temperatures are in the 40's today, so Spring must be here!

Perch on Lake Bemidji are really starting to fatten up, and they're biting more readily daily. Anywhere from 12' to 45' of water is where they fish are biting, more action in shallow, with bigger fish coming from deeper water. The fish are simply roaming right now, moving up and down the humps and breaks in search of food. They'll continue to school harder and become easier to catch and fatter as the season progresses...

When the sun goes down and the perch stop biting you can sit on a breakline or on your favorite midlake hump and chase the elusive eelpout... ;) They're starting to spawn heavily, and are biting from 7 pm to 2 am on the humps and breaks in 14-24' of water.

Many local lakes are putting out crappies and 'gills readily. The bite is only getting better, and will continue to do so through the end of the season. Everything seems to be moving shallower by the day. Look to 8-15' flats for mixed crappie and 'gill action.

Good luck out there!

The Bemidji area is still putting out fish to those who are willing to work a bit...

The crappies and bluegills are starting to re-mix after being apart for most of the dreadful winter. We caught 'gills and crapps mixed on flats ranging from 12-17' of water over the weekend with some dandies tossed in. Below is a guest with the St. Patty's Day spirit and a 12" crappie... ;)

Sat. afternoon and into evening we searched for some perch on Lake Bemidji. Tons of fish were graphed, tons were caught, and 17 were taken home, all 9.5" to 12.5". A couple of real hogs came through the hole, and perch fishing is only going to pick up.

Sat. night the 'pout didn't cooperate, fished the same depths as we have all year with lesser results than every trip this season. Backwards? I thought so too... We only iced 2 'pout for our efforts.

Good luck out there! There are fish to be had!
