As I was driving the country roads around my home last night around 6:00 p.m. I notice several roosters standing around in fields and along fence lines.  I also noticed a few hens taking a break from their nests.  Keep your fingers crossed on the weather.  It sounds like a little rain and cooler weather moving in today but nothing major.  I know some people out in the Marshall area and also the Benson area and they say they it has been a long time since they have seen so many birds (both hens and cocks) going into a breeding season.  It looks to be a banner year if the stars line up right.

I hate to wish my summer away, but reports like this get the blood going and the anticipation starts to build. I'm looking forward to making a few trips to SW Minnesota this fall.

I'm thinking that this year will be really good! Last year was awesome. Everywhere i went I saw birds. I went straight south and saw birds, I went to the slayton area, worthington area, Marshall area, Redwood Falls, Hector and saw birds everywhere. Now I didn't exactly hit everything I saw but I had a blast. I also went to the Benson area for the first time and saw a ton of birds. The Montevideo area was also good. I walked some public stuff there and saw birds. I heard from some people last year that LQP was loaded with birds! I meant to get out there but never made it. Maybe this year, I have never hunted there. I'll get out as much as possible. I bowed out of deer hunting and gave up my spot on the lease so I can pheasant hunt more.

Last year on deer opener at the last minute I decided to go pheasant hunting. I was very skeptical about heading out there with the deer hunters as it was opening weekend where I was hunting. To my suprise it was actually a great trip! There was very few pheasant hunters so I had most places to myself and the deer hunters I did run into were doing their own thing. I saw a ton of birds and deer as well. Maybe this year I will bring some slugs and maybe hunt deer before 9 and then switch. what a success it was. The worst part about it was that I had a limit of birds by 11am.
