I'm hearing rumors of a possible new state record Crappie that was supposedly caught on Rush lake this week. The guy claims it to be 19", this is not confrmed yet either.

I guess the story is that he kept it alive and brought it home and put it in the bathtub, they never really measured it accurately, they pulled out a tape measure and laid it across the water in the tub and did a guess while the fish was swimming.

I'm betting that this supposedly 19 incher turns out to be 16" at best. If for some reason it turns out to be a true story, which I highly doubt, I'm guessing it was caught on a different lake too.

All fish look bigger in the water........ 99% of people exxagerate the size of a fish, by the time we hear about it, the story has probably changed 100 times and the fish grew 3 inches.

Can't wait to hear more about this...... Anyone else hear anything or have any comments?

nope havent heard this story but isnt it illegal to transport live fish. i know when the guy caught the new state record largemouth bass here in victoria, he wanted to keep it alive and the DNR was going to give him a ticket.

Yep, thats right. No live fish can be transported for any reason unless the DNR approves it. Kids 16 and under can transport some species of fish if they are 10" or less, up to 4 of each species.

Unless he obtained permission from the DNR, this guy illegally transported this fish.

It's so sad how so many people do not read the regulations handbook for hunting or fishing and noone does anything about it........

Keeping it alive seems like the right thing to do, but it has to die to become a state record. There was some controversy awhile back about a record fish that was caught and the guy wanted to keep it alive by putting it in one of those huge aquariums at Cabela's(I think). He couldn't claim it as a state record while it was still alive.

OK, let me get this straight. If I catch a half dozen sunfish and put them in a bucket with water and take them home within 10 minutes of catching, these fish would not be dead yet. Is that illegal?

I know I'm nit-picking here but I just want to know.

You can transport fish in water if you are on the lake only, once you leave the lake, the water must be drained no matter if its a bucket, cooler, livewell, box, or anything else. The regs also state that all livewells must be drained when you leave the lake, fish or no fish, you have to drain the water.

To answer your question, yes that would be illegal.

there trying to crack down on these things now, another reason you have to drain the water out of your live well is to stop the spread of aquatic parasites. like milfoil and zebra mussels.

Well in Maryland a guy caught the State recored largemouth, and he donated it to the aquarium in Bass Pro Shops.

This law has been on the books for well over a decade, nothing new.

I hear this was another exaggeration, turns out the so called crappie was looked at with beer goggles on.
