Hello All,

This is my first post in this Forum. I recently acquired some hunting land near upper Red Lake. I was just wondering what kind of luck any one who's hunted that area before has had success with. Any tips is appreciated.

Anyone hunted the State Land up there, the property i will be hunting isn't far from the state land?

Thanks

Welcome to MNO Fourkabe!

I have hunted the state land by URL since I was twelve.  This fall will be my 24th year heading up to that area.  My dad and grandpa have been going up there even longer.  My family has three cabins by URL.

There is a lot of wilderness up in that area.  We hunt 3-4 different spots each year.  We have had a pretty big hunting party over the past couple of years (12-15 people).  We never fill out, nor do we need to. I see deer every year.  So do everyone in our party.  It is pretty thick (brushy) up by URL.  We don't always get to take a shot.

We have seen lots of other wildlife too.  I have seen black bear, moose and timberwolves to name a few.  The past 3-4 years have had a good deer herd.  The winters have been mild.  There were a few years before that when we had a lot of heavy wet snow and killed off many deer.  So, this year should be good, but if we get a bad winter, then next year might be slow.  I now live & hunt in SD, but I still love to come back to MN to deer hunt by Upper Red.  It is challenging, but enjoyable.

I have attached the largest buck I have taken from the URL area.  This not biggest our party has taken over the years.  My grandma (yes grandma) shot a 15 point monster in the early 80's.  My aunt has a monster 10 pointer, and my grandpa has a few 10-12 pointers.  So, big deer do grow up there.
