Ive been deer hunting since I was a kid. I remeber my dad smoking in his stand he shoots a nice deer just about every year, never gets skunked. Now Im grown up and have picked up the habit as well and every time I light one up I wonder.... Can a deer smell the smoke? Does it spook em? Do deer even associate that smell with the smell of a human. I've always assumed it doesn matter cause of my dad, but I also have buddy's who refuse to smoke in the stand and swear that it affects the quality of the hunt. I would like to hear everyone's input from your personall experience, not based on an asssumtion, maybe you know something I dont know??

I was smoking in my stand the year I shot my first deer, I have quit since. Not smoking while I shot him but smoking through out the day. He was about 10yrds away from me when I shot him, but it was all pretty quick he ran up and :fudd:. So maybe he didn't notice.

One of the guys we hunt with who used to smoke but no longer does seems to make a comment every year about it. He always says something along the lines of "I have shot more deer with a cigarette hanging out of my mouth.....".

I don't think it makes any difference personally.

If the wind is blowing there are usually three directions that will not be affected by smoking, drinking, not washing, and any human or other scent you can bring with you.   So, it is easy to see why a guy could shoot a deer while doing all these things.

Last year while hunting. A farmer came out and started to cut hay. I didn't think i would see anything. So i had one then two. Then 6 doe's came out and made thier way up to me. One walked around me the other was 10 ft in front of me. She blow at me and ran off. Then she came back to the same spot. The cigarette was in front of her. I ended up chasing them out before i could get down and go home. I really don't know if it's good or bad.

This is something i will not try when out bow hunting.

my brother smokes all the time and has killed atleast a half dozen nice bucks.  He even shot a nice one after kindling a small fire to warm his hands!  He hunts on the ground.
