When ice fishing for- lets say Walleye, what do you prefer to use? A whole minnow or part minnow?  I like to start out with just a minnow head on the jigging pole while I used a whole minnow on the tip ups.  The theory is the natural oils & juices will attract fish using their sense of smell, while the flash and action of a whole minnow (live) on the tip up will visually stimulate them.

When jigging a whole minnow I hook them just under the dorsal fin.  Deadsticking a whole minnow I tend to tail hook them.

Any tips you want to pass along?
