The Red Lake Band of Chippewa has begun limited commercial walleye netting on Red Lake. One crew is supplementing fish caught by hook and line for the band's commercial operation. The band started netting because angler success has diminished recently, a pattern noticed by nonband anglers on Upper Red Lake.

More of our tax dollars at work there, we pay they play!!
The band did as little as they could with out looking bad back when the DNR asked for cooperation to replentish the walleyes.

Now they want to harvest as much as they can to pad thier pockets, they don't use the fish in any ceramonies that I am aware of.

Let them have the walleyes that are in the lake now, stop restocking them and let the crappies come back!!!

It's a shame, can't stand the netting, but what do you do. It's a shame these lakes are abused like this.

Well I hope the white man learns from this and let the red man stock his own walleyes! Seems with some folks, if you give them a foot, they'll take a mile. To bad we can't build an under water fence and keep the fish in non trible waters. I also believe that 200 years ago ,the red man used spears not nets! I also think that after columbus had that thanksgiving with the indians, i don't think they jumped on thier horses and hit the redmans local casino!   BS  I say :taz:

As much as I hate to admit it, it is kinda ironic how they are sticking it to us. When we took their land and gave them "marginal use" land, let them be their own sovereign nations on it, and kinda left them on it for dead. Now they are sticking it to us by taking game we pay to stock and money we donate to fill an addiction at the casino. And all legal like under the treaties our past leaders struck with them. Really, who are the dummies? I do miss those crappies to the tune of 60-70 through the doors of my shop per year! They were OK to eat as well ;) ;D.

Who took their land,I didnt take a thing why should I pay for it ? If they want casinos let them have them, but dont tell me that I cant own a casino because Im white. Change the laws If one race can net let everyone net or spear, stop the goverment help, let the sovereign nation take care of itself without our tax dollars. Are we not the melting pot of the world, then why do we pay to keep a race seperate? :sorry:

I suppose someone will snope this but I heard in the same treaty it states that if more than five Indians are spotted together outside the reservation it is considered a war party and they may be shot on sight. That part does not apply to today. I am all for traditional spearing and hand woven netting but not in a $30k boat with million candlepower spotlights and mono gill nets.

I didn't take it either (the land). And I didn't say I thought it was correct. I said it is ironic however. "We" being the white euro settler that came in and took the land.
We should change a bunch of laws, and turn the damn melting pot into an iron locked door. You think I enjoy paying taxes to educate and medicate all that flow in today? Not a chance.
Kinda ironic isn't it? How do you think those "natives" liked the foreigners moving in back then?
No need to apologize to me. I would rather know someones views than have a sugar coated politically correct answer. That is half the problem with this bleeding heart society of today.

Can any one tell me what to look under to find this treaty?

heres a link that has the treaty's http://www.kstrom.net/isk/maps/mn/treaties.html  I don't believe that the party of 5 is a true provision, I'm trying to recall a minnesota history class I took in college where this was brought up.
if you can use the argument that they need to be in birch canoes using homemade nets and spears couldn't it then be argued that the 2nd amendment only is intended for muskets? since there is no provision specifying this "equipment" in either document I would hesitate to label it with those conditions for fear that the anti gun crowd could use the same argument with law abiding gun owners.
and please don't start tossing out the "they lost a war" because if you new your history you would understand how stupid that statement is in regards to american indians.
FYI... my personal opinion is that it is a waste of resources to stock these lakes for the tribes to profit, but it's even more stupid for people to support their stupid casino's. it only took 200 years but the indians finally learned how to play the white mans game.

I dont believe comparing the 2nd amend and hogging game can be compared, like comparing apples and oranges.

Netting for thier own use is one thing, commercial netting for profit is another!!!!!! Maybe due to greed its time for politics. Tolls on roads going in and out of reservations for anyone who doesnt live or work there? Inspections of all fish leaving reservation(for-sale) The list could be endless...OR maybe the netting could and should stop and we would have fishing for everyone...At the very least stocking should be suspended :banghead:  enough said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this reminds me in a way of the vietnamese people who raid one of our local lakes here every summer.  they come armed with their slip bobbers and crappie minnows and each family member takes home a walmart sack filled with panfish.  what's so bad about this you ask?  a vast majority of them don't have fishing licenses, or probably even green cards for that matter.  it's enough to piss a guy off.  I'm just wondering if there's so many of us who feel the same on so many of these issues, why can't we get something together to make sure things change?  I mean surely there's got to be ONE politician out there with a brain inside his head?

I've seen things like this before Finch. Put the TIP line in your cell phone and use it when you witness these things. I have no problem calling it in when I see this stuff.

As much as most of you do not want to hear this (this also includes me), these are two very different situations. The people you speak of are doing it illegally, the indian bands are acting under the law. It is not their fault that our politicians continue to foolishly allow the DNR to keep restocking for them. It is also not their fault that our ancestors gave them these rights by the treaties they are following. Like I said while I do not agree with it, it is what it is. And until our elected leaders wake up we have nobody to blame but ourselves and our forefathers.

I generally just go ask them to see their licenses.  they scatter pretty quickly when you act like you have authority.  asked one of the GFP rangers last summer about the legality of it and he said that it is a right that I bear as a license holder.  so whatever, I can play game warden for the day. :)

and Shane I see the way you're bringing it also, but, my question remains, why can't we get the people together and change these outdated laws and treaties?  these nations want to be their own and independent of America, yet they don't want to get off the tit, and no one is making them, either.  I think the fine details of this treaty fell through the cracks somewhere, how is it beneficial for the gov't to have the DNR pay oodles of money to stock the lakes, for the indians to net them and sell them?  this is a situation where the state is essentially getting thousands of dollars stolen from it.  I filled in one blank wrong on my tax form and had a letter in my mailbox about 3 days later telling me I owed the government money.
