Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 8/30/09

Recently weather patterns and lower-than-average temperatures hint that fall has arrived.

Anglers are arming themselves with several bait choices as the challenge to boat walleyes gets a little tougher.

The walleye bite going on now is not definite. Bait choice and depths vary amongst anglers and their preferences.

Jig-and-minnow has proven successful at depths of 30 feet plus; whereas, slip-sinker rigs are doing the job at 24 - 28'.

Center Reef and the flats are still a good choice for anglers on the west-end of the lake. Mid-Kabetogama towards Namakan try the Martin Islands, Chase Island and the Blind Ash Narrows' mouth for deeper fish.

Northern pike are showing some aggression towards artificials. Ideal places to find them--Lost Bay, Daily Bay, and Mud Bay. Close by in Namakan try Junction Bay.

Smallmouth--not really turned on--look for them near the rock piles and reef edges where you would find crayfish mixed with baitfish.

This beautiful time of year is when these northern lakes yield lots of trophies. The thrill of catching and releasing big fish will leave you with everlasting memories.

Hope to see you soon!
