Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty isn't the kind of slob hunter I'd want in my party. Pawlenty wounded a deer up near Thief River Falls opening morning, and then instead of trying to track it down, he took off for a political fund-raising event in Iowa and left the trqacking to the rest of his hunting party. The wounded deer was never found--another victim of poor sportsmanship, except this time, the poor sportsman is the governor of Minnesota.

http://www.startribune.com/local/69657497.html

This says a lot about the character of a guy who wants to be president--enough to know that he doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the White House. Or the governor's mansion, for that matter. Pawlenty set a poor example for younger hunters by participating in his cheap publicity stunt, shooting a deer and then bailing out on the hunt leaving others behind to clean up his mess. That's pathetic. I hope hunters remember this when Gov. Gutshot comes looking for your support. This slob should be ticketed for wanton waste of game and never be allowed to hunt again. If you can't finish the hunt you start, then don't hunt at all, Gov. Gutshot.  :fudd:

That's not my opinion--that's just good hunting ethics. Or are you of the "opinion" that, say, shining and baiting deer is just fine? Or leaving a wounded deer to rot in the woods is just fine? Or taking a shot at a deer when you know full well you have to be in another state in a few hours is ethical? Sorry pal, I hope you're in a woods far, far away from me when I'm hunting.

So are you claiming to have never missed or wounded a deer?  I am guessing the miss was not intentional.  Also if the party took up the search how would that be any different than my grandpa wanting to hunt, but knows full well he cannot track due to his bad legs from Vietnam so the rest of the hunting party knows that they have to take care of it?

Hmm, you think maybe BuckBomber might be a Liberal?    Doesn't sound as if they would have found the deer even if Pawlenty stayed to help.  Not that it makes it right or wrong.  Just saying... ;)

so you have never shot a deer and couldn't find it?  Never?

was him leaving and not sticking around to help bad for his image? yeah, probably.

not finding a deer you shot makes you a bad and unethical hunter?  absolutely not.  I have not found a deer that I shot once. It was black powder and I had a misfire and the bullet didn't have the right velocity.  I hit the deer right behind the shoulder, but due to powder foul-up, the bullet didn't penetrate to provide the lethal blow. And we tracked for 2 days and covered miles.  crap happens.  I didn't like the fact we didn't find it.  It was a nice deer, I wanted it.  I guess that makes me a poor sportsman.

my point is, we don't want to mix your politic "opinion" about a person and hunter ethics.  This is an outdoors website.  not a, "can you believe this <insert politician here>, what an ass" website.

No, not bothering to go look for a deer you wounded makes you a slob hunter. Pawlenty is no Grampa with war injuries--he was perfectly capable of trying to track his wounded deer himself. He knew full well he wouldn't have time to track a deer, but he shot anyway and left the mess to others to clean up. After all, he got his photo op out of it. You keep wanting to go back to the politics of Pawlenty. How about his hunting ethics? Or are you willing to defend a slob hunter just because he's Republican? Leave the politics aside and answer me: do you approve of this type of hunter?

If this is supposed to be a hunting board, there sure seems to be a lot of hunter education needed among you folks. Or are you the reason why baiting and other unethical hunting behavior is on the rise? Doesn't make me too proud to be a hunter with the likes of you defending such reprehensible behavior.

Oh, John Wester, who made you self-appointed censor here? You sound like at least you bothered to try to track your wounded deer--unlike Gov. Gutshot. Why would you defend this guy?

not trying to defend him... just trying to keep the political banter out of things.  Had this been a prominent democrat, I doubt we'd be having this debate.
so let's state it this way...

"Some hunter shot a deer on his hunting trip, but had to leave before the deer could be recovered do to a function that was work related.  But his very experienced hunting party is tracking and looking for his deer."

now, let the debate continue...  is this hunter a slob hunter?  keeping politics aside and not mentioning names...

Shooting an animal then leaving your party to track it (Saturday and Sunday), is not wanton waste. If this wasn't T-Paw, there wouldn't be anyone even talking about uncle Jim who had to go feed the cows, or finish up milking for the evening and left the cousins to track the wounded deer, so please spare everyone the ethics speech.

Don't forget to post your source where you found that unethical hunting on the rise.

The governor of the state of Minnesota should be setting an example for good hunting ethics and safety. Gov. Gutshot failed big time at that. You wonder why hunters get a bad rap? It's because high-profile assholes like Gov. Gutshot exhibit poor hunting ethics in full view of the public. Gov. Gutshot didn't have any "official" business he ran off to. It was a presidential campaign fund-raiser. Gov. Gutshot is governor of Minnesota. This is not official business. It's no different than had he run off to watch a ballgame or have a beer.

Tim Pawlenty is a slob hunter. Period. And when he dons his blaze orange and tries to get the votes of hunters by claiming he's one of us, they should remember that he's not one of us--at least not one of us that I hunt with. You all will suffer because of Gov. Gutshot's lack of hunting ethics. Every one of you should be outraged.

Please spare me any more comparisons between Gov. Gutshot and hard-working Uncle Jim or anyone else who you're trying to excuse for leaving a wounded animal to die in the woods. Gov. Gutshot ran away from his game to attend a political fund-raiser. In Iowa. Not official business. Not critical. Not anywhere close.

Oh, you want a source for my claim that illegal hunting is on the rise. Here are two articles from this weekend's deer opener alone:

http://www.startribune.com/sports/outdoors/34307179.html?elr=KArks7PYDiaK7DU2EkP7K_V_GD7EaPc:iLP8iUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUU

http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_13757357

An "unprecedented" number of firearms were seized from Minnesota hunters last weekend as illegal deer baiting reached new high levels, say Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials. ...

Deer baiting has become "epidemic" in northern Minnesota, said conservation officer Jeremy
Woinarowicz in his weekend report, and many officers are now spending the bulk of their opening weekends chasing illegal baiters, according to DNR officials.

how do you know he didnt attempt to recover the deer until he had to leave? just because you read it somewere? so you have never had to leave hunting camp because you got called to work? i love hunting just as much as anyone else on here but if work called i have to go, regardless if i needed to track a deer or not. work wins the battle over hunting because hunting doesnt pay the bills. plus he left it to pro guides to try there best to find it. this happens alot every year but why does it come out when its a public figure? we even had someone wound a deer and have it run on our property they crossed lines until i confronted them and asked them what they were doing. they got defensive and and showed me the blood trail well i stayed out there and helped them look but as it got dark and i was leaving i asked them to leave and come back at about 9am. they said they would be back at first light and i told them no they aint because im hunting that spot and dont want them tracking through the woods and told them to call the house in the morning and they never called or came back for the deer.... same thing in my book.

o by the way its not a good sign if you sign up for a site and start  :bs: like this and not post anything else. if you dont like the governer thats your own problem but dont come on here and start bashing him

I think we should take the ban off of Machine guns - That way we would kill the deer for sure - We should also deregulate baiting so we can use bait piles to get the deer in for closer more ethical shots. We should also make it legal to use dogs for tracking. I think we shold also fence in every section a week b4 the season so the deer can't run when wounded because we would find them for sure then.

Pawlenty may need some shooting lessons, but It's not like he was plinking eagles from a chopper. Get off your high hores. Sometimes it helps to take deep breaths and read old ice fishing posts with a hot cup of tea.

How about put shock collars on all the deer and train them to heal after they get shot so we can try again!

"that's ok he only has a 5 foot leash"

Personally, I think its pretty damn cool that a Govenor of ours goes deer hunting!  This day and age, for someone in politics to be seen with a firearm of any kind, let alone hunting, or god forbid... actually trying to kill something, takes some kahunas...  For someone in todays society & in the public eye to be an outdoorsman(person ;)) isnt doing it to get more votes....Im sure it will hurt his image more than help it on a national scale.... believe me, he hunts and fishes because he likes to, and probably doesnt care much on the national publics opinion about it, or he wouldnt put his head on the chopping block and start the MN Govenors Deer hunt.... I wonder how many Dems would be all over Tim if he didnt show to his other obligations because he was tracking a deer? ;D  Whether you voted for him or not, Ya gotta give kudos to a guy who took the polar plunge at the Eelpout festival...even though he had some neoprene wakeboarding gear on... :whistling: Just my 3 cents.....

I cannot believe I just spent time reading this  :bs:.  Really, What was I thinking?

Our Gov. is a public figure and anything he does will be scrutinized regardless of the situation.  If it was just a regular 9 to 5 Joe Q., no one would have said boo.  However, it's not and being the Gov. magnifies the issue of not finding a wounded deer.  That is unfortunate, but you know what, it happens regardless of who you are.  A slob hunter? An unethical sportsman? Seriously?  Doubt it but that's my take on it.  He must have raised your taxes........ oops, I mean charged you another "fee".

And by the way, I am not a fan of the Gov.  As a teacher in a public school, I'm tired and frustrated with the way he has screwed educational funding. But that neither here nor there, I'm not going waste other people's time with my rants and raves.  If you have a problem with our Gov. regardless if he is a bad shot, a slob hunter, or some other candid label, go piss and moan some where else.  Take the political  :bs: to people who give a rat's  :moon:.

Take a kid hunting and fishing... It'll be the best thing for generations to come.

:sorry: Thought you were a hunter and were truly mad because hunter X was casting all outdoorsman in a bad light. The mentioned quote above lets me know that you are neither, and just wish to spew drivel that is borderline trolling. For outdoors enthusiasts, we all know that bad press for one, is bad press for all.

I have a real good feeling what side of the fence you may be on when it comes to hunting after reading; "leaving a wounded animal to die in the woods", which was a false statement also as there were plenty of people that were tracking and trying to recover the animal. There's a real good clip on youtube that shows people crying for the trees, I'll see if I can find it somewhere and post it for you.

Ahh, Now here is an entertaining post!

Since someone brought up education funding, I see it is fair game.  :offtopic: I think the governor is spending way to much on it!  My Dad is a retired lifelong teacher, and one of my brothers teaches middle school.  I guess those cushy gov teaching jobs paid for Dad's two farms that I get to hunt, hefty retirement pension of 40,000+ till death and raising 9 boys so I better not complain :whistling:

Politics is not a discussion topic here at the present. Our esteemed Governor in no way should be chastised for Making a bad shot. Perhaps a little ribbing is in order. But calling for an execution is completely insane words. A deer that has been shot in no way means it will die because of it. I understand that Gov. Pawlenty signed a bill that provided my Korean war vet father with a no cost disabled vet deer license this year. The Pawlenty name in my book will not be tarnished by a fanatical tree hugger.

Buckbomber must have had to run off to a Dem party function because he could not stay around and track the rest of the  :bs: thread he started.  I guess this thread will just run off and die without him....shucks that is too bad.  I hope I don't loose a wounded deer this weekend or I will get slammed as a slob hunter I guess.  I guess my Uncle Don Stenseth (RIP) is a slop hunter too because he lost a deer in the swamp that one year not to mention he lost a boot and sock trying to track it when it was 40 degrees out.  Man he was such a slob hunter!  He probably just flipped in his grave reading this from above.
