The best places are by dead elms but they will grow anywhere. I find them on our oak ridges on southern facing hills, in aspens, and in thick brush. Also just up from a creek or low area. Honestly take a picture out with you. No joke it helps you find them. After you find one you will find more around.
Cut them off a little above the ground and that way they will keep growing there yr after yr.
Let the small bucks walk. Don't assume the neighbors will shoot them if you don't. If you shoot him what chance does that buck have to grow......ZERO!

I went out yesterday on my land.  Although I didn't find them wide spread, where I did find them there were lots of nice ones.  I found them in aspen, both older mature and 20 year old regen.  I found them both on high and low ground.  I didn't see a difference between north or south exposures.
I picked about 100 in two hours.

This is how they appear in the woods.

One with my hat to show general size.

When you are lucky they appear in herds.

***I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.***

Just got back from a lunchtime run and found 25 nice ones in 20 min.  If it starts raining there should be lots more tomorrow.

Ran into a friend that was between Belle Plaine and Mankato and he had 5 grocery bags full.  The guy won't take me with because he sells them and doesn't want to share.  That ok because I wouldn't take him to any of my spots.

3 miles and a few hrs later........ZERO!!! Brainerd are is still sucking the big one. If I was out looking for dead deer I would be happy. 5 more tonight. These weren't people dumping them either. These were well of the beaten path. Only one fawn the rest were mature deer. I'm sure they were the "sick" ones the wolves got out of the herd. Thank you peta
