http://www.startribune.com/sports/outdoors/blogs/93814979.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUgOahccyiUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUUs</blockquote></div>

Then~

The natives in the other corner~

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2010/05/14/treatyprotest/

Understand where this issue leading to?

Now this protest was nothing compared to whats going on with mille laces,it is merely a statement by the indians seeking attention, they got very little but still made a point and no one was arrested or cited,I'LL tell ya what,if any of us were cited for a gross mistermeanor,we'd be sitting in the cty jail.

RIDICULOUS!  If the CO was going to cite a native their would be an uproar of racisms and not giving them what they are "entitled to under the treaty'"
But a normal folk does it and they are cited!  Apparently since they are natives they can fish anytime they want with a net.... doesnt seem right to me.  I bet I would have been cited with the gross misdemeanor if I would have went out on the lake with a gill net.
Thank god for people like Steve, too bad what he did will barely be heard.  When there is something like this where apparently whites and natives have different fishing rights, the natives can get away with alot, because no CO wants to be brandished as a racist or anti-native american!
Why cant they fish like the rest of us, with a line, hook and bait

It seems that there were a few CO's present.  I doubt it was the CO's call.  They were probable told what to do by a suppervisor who was told by a lawyer or polatition up above.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Indians lawyer-up and sewed the CO for cutting the net.  Time for a good old fashion WAR!

what I don't understand is everyone wants to be an "American" then no separate government. if you want special treatment then you are no different in my eyes than an illegal alien and you are NOT an American. You are an Indian and should not have any rights as an American citizen!

there are two countries within the U.S. the U.S.A. and the Reservations. you want equality then earn it no more affirmative action, no more sovereign nations, no more racism. stop teaching it in schools and it will eventually vanish, that's how i learned about the "slaves".

IF YOU WANT SPECIAL RIGHTS THEN YOU ARE ASKING TO BE UNEQUAL. AND AS SUCH I WILL NOT TREAT YOU AS EQUAL UNTIL YOU TREAT YOURSELVES AS EQUAL!
my wife said it.... im OFFICIALLY ADDICTED to MNO!!

I think the crying is being done by all the natives who were doing this netting on the 14th.
They are complaining they dont have rights anymore.... Im pretty sure that doesnt make much sense.  They think they are entitled to everything and they can do whatever they want, thats not the case - these 'treaties' are being taken advantage of.  I think the solution is easy, quit thinking you are entitled to everything and go about things the same way as everyone else, like stated before, if you want to be equal, you can have the same rights as everyone else.
We arent crying, we are merely stating the double standard with the whole thing!  - What gives you the right to fish illegally out of season?

IF YOU WANT SPECIAL RIGHTS THEN YOU ARE ASKING TO BE UNEQUAL. AND AS SUCH I WILL NOT TREAT YOU AS EQUAL UNTIL YOU TREAT YOURSELVES AS EQUAL!

that will NEVER happen with any president maybe you should become more passionate about better causes instead of whining about treaty rights on fishing blogs. Case has been over for ten plus years now its time to grow up and move on your rants are getting old if you have such a huge issue with the treaty come over to my place and let me have it...

no its people abusing the treaty, whats getting old is they think they cant do whatever they want because they have different beleifs(sp) than us, well im sure 3/4 the people on this board has different beleifs than the others but WE ALL have to follow the same laws, because once they let them net off reservation and whenever and where ever they want, whats that going to do to the fish population and the people who pay for the fish to be stocked in that lake in the first place? while they make profit from it? this is a better cause because if someone dont stick up for it they will quite litterally net the lakes dead just like red lake...........

Cody,

They'll just make the walleye stamp mandatory. It's all a bunch of BS. Stop the netting. All I say. It's a joke. The government is a joke, the DNR is a joke. He who has money, has power. Pretty lame way to run a country.

Bluwave, if the issue is dead for over 10 years now ,then why did the White Earth and Leech lake bands have to place nets in Lake Bimiji and make a big issue of the CO taking thier nets?

It would seem those bands are the ones who decided to start crying over these 10 year old issue because they didn't get in on the law suite 10 years back.

They were given 100's of millions of dollars to NOT net even though they didn't have a stake in that law suite.

Now they want to back out of that agreement after they took the cash for all those years.

Maybe they should give all the money back then as well.

If the bands had not decided to take part in that Friday the 14th netting protest there would not have been any thread like this going.

No one would have blinked an eye accept to bitch about the Wisconsin bands dumping those fish intrails.

Thanks, Benny

Good points Cody and Benny, how true... We've got the leech lake band gathering on leech w/o one word to the media and they have been all along, they keep it low key and they feed their famlies,so what, its part of their heritage, however what would happen if the tribes from wisc went to leech next spring to gill nett 100k or more to sell?

Blue, alot of us give a sh$t on whats taking place on mille laces whether you like or not,if threads like this bother you quit reading them and posting your negative remarks, hopefully we'll have enough support from our states outdoor community to get this issue back on the table and  have equal rights for all while saving the lake at the same time.

Case is not over or the Natives wouldn't be protesting it would they?

Hey, you want to hunt and fish and follow a 200 year old treaty, I'm fine with that. Dig out your own canoes, use a buffalo net and paddle your arse out there. Also, don't take one damn dime of MY gov't money. If you don't want to follow MY gov't rules and live by your own "Nation", fine, do it with out MY money.

Otherwise, quit pissing and moaning. Suck it up and become one country as we should be.
