"SAFE" drivable ice in the metro...  I didn't get out to my hunny hole last year because I couldn't get to it...  BUT this year my buddy has a sled so we have that if the ice isn't "safe".

More time to fish.  If the boy is interested enough this year I want to take him to Mille Lacs and some more local lakes on the weekends.  Bringing him with me makes getting out of the house easier.  He showed promise this summer  :)

We'll get you out to do some crappie fishing this year Mayfly. I've got an extra portable you can borrow.

Thats a good age. If you want to have some fun, find some shallow water(10 feet or less) rig him up with a little jig pole(like a Marmooska jig pole) and tell him when he sees the cork go down to just hold the rod and run. Doing it this way allows him to keep his mittens on. Warm hands are important. Bring plenty of snacks/hot cocoa and make it a short trip. You should be fine.?

Just don't let him step in any open holes. It ends a trip real quick....I've had it happen more than once.

My boys are 11 and 13 now.(but they got a little brother on the way)

Super cheap and work great for them shallow water pannies. I found mine at Fleet Farm for $4 or $5.

Hey now, Scott!  :-\
We're there, man.  Just let me know when and where.

Joe  ;D   Funny that you mention the wet hands and stepping in holes thing.  Last year he stuck his hands in holes 3 times and it ended each trip out.  I was the one that kept stepping in holes  ;)
I rig his Scooby rod up with a slip bobber.... same one as his summer rig.  I figure the more time he spends with it the more he'll get used to it.  Sometimes I just tell him to go fish in the pond behind the house to practice his casting...
