Mayfly invasion: Weather radar catches massive hatching event in Mississippi River

  
The radar view shows an image at 9:13 p.m. CDT on May 29, 2010. The bugs are showing up as bright pink, purple, and white colors along the Mississippi River mainly south of La Crosse. After the bugs hatch off the water and river areas, they are caught in the south-southeast winds while airborne for about 10-20 minutes. (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)

A mayfly hatch along the Mississippi River was amazingly caught on Doppler radar out of NWS La Crosse on Saturday.

Mayflies lay their eggs on the top of fresh water before the eggs sink to the bottom.

Their population is seen both as a sign of the onset of spring and summer and a guide to the health of the body of water from which they hatch.

It is definitely pretty nuts down here during the hatch.  Im down here in Winona - a sight to see, thats for sure.
