A week ago Scott and I spent the weekend with his folks on Roosevelt Lake in Outing. Our quest of course was to bring home the Stanley Cup of Fishing - The Heisman Trophy of Angling - The 2010 MNO Fishing Challenge Championship.

Scott came by to pick me up about 2pm in the afternoon on Friday. The plan was that Scott would drive and pull my boat up. I was told that there was no need to bring my boat up but I'm pretty sure that I have spent the summer reading about all the things that don't work on the dentists boat - so I prevailed.

One of the first things that struck me when my teammate showed up was that Scott travels with a posse. Who knew? That's right our boy showed up with 2 hamster sized dogs riding shotgun. Lucky for me the dogs and I quickly made friends and they allowed me to serve as their dog lounger on the way to Outing.

Except for a number of overly clever detours we made to avoid detours that we aren't even sure really existed we finally arrived at the lake. Scott dropped me off at the landing and I headed up the lake looking for the cabin. And found it with no problem. Beautiful place and beautiful lake by the way.

We didn't waste much time. Our plan for Friday night was to troll the depths for trophy walleyes. Scott said we would be taking his boat because it had down riggers even though we weren't going to be using the down riggers. Now I have to describe Scott's boat. A big old deep thing painted for duck hunting. One seat in it. Looks like it was build in the 1800's and has been inhabited by green moss-backed trolls for the last 100 years. The gunwale was a living breathing terrarium of ferns and mosses. I was scratching my head, but who am I to argue. The first thing we did was plug in the navigation lights but none of them worked. We quickly amended the evening plan to fish out of my boat.

I think we fished until about 10:00 with no success and headed in. We headed to the bar for supper - giant hamburgers. I was starving.

The next morning we were both up at 7. After a thorough inspection of my teeth for any signs of tooth decay we were on the water. I learned another thing about Scott Saturday morning. Breakfast is a 6-pack of diet Coke.

We caught fish steadily throughout the day both days but nothing very big maybe 15 or 16" at the most. We tried every bait known to man (including live frogs) but nothing really stood out. At one point we tried some trolling and caught 4-5 small northerns.

On Saturday afternoon we went in to the bait shop and picked up some live bait. Scott noticed the woman who owns the t-shirt shop and suggested I tell her about the Fawkinnae line. She seemed pretty interested so maybe I will pick up another commercial customer. We bumped into her at the bar Saturday night and I gave her a bumper sticker which was well received.

Great trip. Perfect weather. My teeth have never been cleaner. I had a great time fishing with Scott. His folks were terrific. And we're still in second place trying to catch "Fish in the grease in the pan".

I've taken the liberty of forwarding your story to the In-Fisherman. Just wanted to give you a heads up since you'll be hearing from them soon. You guys should be appearing in one of the up coming issues. I think it's going to be listed in their "Doo's and Don'ts" section. :doah:

Thanks for posting, nice read  :coffee: :happy1: :happy1:

Doug it was good we went last weekend.  The fish were gone this weekend.  Even the gal at the boutique was gone.  I had a great time and will be working until the end on the challenge.  By the way I changed a fuse and the boat, lights, and electronics worked better than they did all summer.  I think my vessel still has a little life in her yet.  The ankle biters are doing their part too.  They have been tearing apart Kenhuntin dolls that I made for them.  The General dolls did not give them much of a challenge. ;)

This just to cool, when I started the Challenge three years ago the intent was to take random members here and get them to fish with others and make friends. Here is an example of a couple of guys that now have a life long bond even if they don't want it !  :rotflmao:    :happy1:

DDS,

I just have to ask.  Did you have one of those girly coffee makers for Fawk?  The kind I'm speaking about is adding milk and stuff.......

P.S.  Did you have to wake him up too? :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

It is good as the Honorable Bobby Bass says to see guys get together and enjoy a day on the water. Mr. Benson seems to be very popular and coveted fishing partner. I also tried to spend some time angling with the man, but I must have done something wrong because he spent about 20 minutes and left. I ended up with a cooler full of fish after he left so maybe that was a good thing.

Oh heck no Ken........you are for sure welcome.  In fact I think if I remember correct the day some of us headed out you were invited and so was DDS.  You said you had a day of shopping and DDS had a day of scrap booking planned.  We offered  to pick you guys up, free sandwiches, and beer..................but I guess you both had your priorities. ;)

You speak the truth Herr General. I was shopping that day in Ear Falls Ontario. I got a great bargain on a European speedo. The cieling was too low for the float plane to take us out. Spent most of the non stop rainy day in Showalters waiting room listening to eight Packer fans brag about how wonderful they are.

No he didn't - and I'm still bitter. You'd think that a guy smart enough to get through dental school could teach his dogs how to make coffee for his partner.

Ken - funny you should bring that up. I just upgraded to a 4-wheel-drive SUV (even though it kind of a girly one) from a 2-wheel drive SUV. So I will be better able and more confident bushwacking my way across Leech in the middle of February. I pray that I get invited out to the Ken-Shack again.
